Oak Ridge was built by the federal government during the Second World War, and it still runs on federal science and energy work. The national laboratory and the Y-12 complex employ a large engineering and technical workforce, a lot of whom live in town — on a badge-controlled campus during the day, and in the evening in a house that was put up fast in the 1940s.
That housing stock is the story for a trade. The original alphabet houses and flat-tops, the mid-century streets that followed, and the additions bolted onto both over eighty years. Original plumbing. Original panels. Roofs on their third or fourth cycle. A heat pump doing a job the house was never designed for.
